• Question: Do you enjoy looking at elements of the periodic table, Such as Iron? We're about to learn it as our next topic in science, so I'd to ask if other people enjoyed looking at it.

Hi Lucy! It is always fascinating to look at the periodic table and imagine scientists discovering all these elements.
Iron is a very interesting elements. This metal has been exploited by people since prehistoric times. It is actually present in many things (from keys to shellfish…) but in different concentrations!

Yeah, I found this interesting to study. The periodic table hides so much information in it, if you know how to look! For example, down a group (column) the elements have similar reactivities. This topic will give you a bit of an introduction to this idea, I hope you find it interesting!

I mostly work with carbon so it can be really important for me to still look at the periodic table and keep up to date with what the metals are doing! Although I did always find the non-metals (like Carbon, Nitrogen, Oxygen and Chlorine) much more interesting!

There is loads and loads of information in the periodic table. I look at it and think if I mix A with B, what material will I get. I mix different elements with zirconium to make different materials.

For example, if you mix zirconium with cerium, you make a catalyst that is found in your catalytic converter on cars.
If you mix zirconium with yttrium, you make ceramic materials which are used to stop turbine blades melting in power stations.

Iron is super interesting- it has so many different applications! It’s in our blood, we use it for building (and have done for thousands of years) and it’s magnetic! Did you know that if you get cornflakes that say ‘fortified with iron’ on the box you can make them move around your cereal bowl with a magnet?
