I really like experiments that change colour- one experiment I do that measures the activity of my enzyme changes from colourless to yellow depending on how active the enzyme is

I enjoy being in the lab and trying new experiments that noone has done before. This is a picture of a crystal of a new MOF that I made. The image is through a microscope camera – you can see a piece of a fibre from my t-shirt on the metal pin which can give you an idea of the size! I was shining x-rays at my sample which bounce off the atoms and can give me an idea of how the atoms are connected.

I do so many experiments that I don’t have a favourite but this is one of my favourites to show people. This is my colleague doing the jelly baby experiment where the sugar in the jelly baby is all oxidised. /wp-content/uploads/2019/11/VID-20191120-WA0001.mp4

Lab work is by far one of my favourite things to do at work! I do an experiment at the moment which requires my vessel temperature to be below 0 degrees Celsius – this means that I get a build up of ice all over my vessel and on the tubes which help keep my reaction cold. There is something very relaxing about cracking the ice off of it – even if that isn’t related to the chemistry itself!
