• Question: have you ever blown any thing up

      Generally, as researchers, we try very hard to not blow things up. My boss would be quite unhappy if I started blowing things up in his expensive lab. There was a lecturer in my old uni who did study explosives (for demolishing buildings etc). They put his lab on the top floor so he didn’t blow the rest of us up.

      To stop accidents like explosions happening (and to keep everyone safe) we have very strict helath and safety rules. I have only and one explosion in my lab so far which was caused by faulty equiptment and could have been very dangerous. Thankfully we have to plan for accidents and I was able to contain the problem very quickly to avoid any problems.

      Nope! I have over-pressurised a vessel and it cracked, but I wouldn’t count that!

      I haven’t (thankfully!) but a few years ago someone scaled up a reaction badly and blew up the entire second floor chemistry lab…
