Not directly, no. But the changes I make to processes often remove chemicals which cause cancer or which could kill you if the safety measures failed. So I have probably helped stop someone dying – but not in any big dramatic way. More just in a “I stopped them slowly increasing their risk of cancer” or “I stopped them dying from being leaked on by a dripping pipe”.
I haven’t no. I work on things that might reduce the carbon emissions from different processes for example. I do have several friends from uni working in medicinal chemistry in pharmaceutical companies who have probably been involved in developments that do change/save people’s lives.
