My job is to make sure I am getting better results than the other scientists who have worked on any given process have. Whether than is in terms of how much product I get out or in terms of how clean my process is, my role is to improve other people’s processes so we aim not to be consistent with others! It’s only really important that I am consistent with my own results and those of other people in my team if they are working on the same thing (which is very rare).

This is a really good question. Reproducibility is really important – we repeat our experiments to make sure that we can get the same result multiple times and, when we share out results with other scientists, we have to give very specific instructions for how to do it. Unfortunately some people’s work isn’t always reproducible and this can be very annoying. In general our results are consistent with other people in the area, and when they are not we double check.
