There was a company offering a new type of equipment which could help me make a new type of nano particle. I managed to get a trial on the equipment and it worked. The barrier was it took 2 years to convince the company to invest in the equipment so we could make these materials ourselves. The result is our customer loves the new material and the project is getting close to launch.

I think I’ve been most proud of developing my first process all the way from concept to full scale plant!

I think the biggest barrier I have overcome is one I made for myself! For a long time I was not very confident at all in my abilities and I was really scared that one day someone would say ‘you’re not good enough for this job’. I was always worried to talk about my work to people in case there was something wrong. It took a long time but I grew in confidence and now I know that I am quite good at what I do (which is why I have my job!) and that I learn things very quickly.
I found overcoming this quite hard and was lucky that my boss was very supportive and encouraging – I’m proud that I worked on overcoming this challenge and happy that I can be confident when discussing my research.

The protein I work with is notoriously difficult and very insoluble. I made a discovery that improved the yield by 17,300% and also gave us some valuable insights into its reactivity. That was definitely the highlight of my PhD and then thing I am proudest of in my reseach career!
