I make things called MOFs which look a bit like molecular size sponges with lots of holes in. One teaspoon of MOF can have the surface area as a football pitch – I find that pretty cool!
The coolest thing I find about my work is I can make a material in Manchester, ship it to a customer on the other side of the world, host a video call with a fellow Scientist from another country and discuss our work and how we can make our projects become successful. Speaking to my equivalent chemist in Japan about something I made with my own hands is amazing.
Everyday is different so I never get bored and I often have to travel to other countries where meet new people (often archaeologists or museum curators who show me amazing archaeological objets to study).
I find most things about my job pretty cool! But mostly I like it when I can tell a customer that we have their process working, and working better than it came to us!
