We do use Hydrofluoric acid (HF) at our facility and this is a very dangerous acid which has to be handled very carefully. Luckily nothing has ever gone wrong when using it but it is always one of those chemicals you have to treat with respect.
We work with a few quite nasty compounds where I work, but Thionyl Chloride is probably one of the ones which cause us the most problems! A lot of work has to be done to make sure we have the right pipes and reaction vessels to stop it breaking down the pipes and dripping onto the floor or even other people!
Yes! We need to wear labcoat, goggles, safety shoes, gloves (sometimes 2 pairs or special ones) and need to work in a fumehood, which removes all the nasty fumes before they can get into your lungs!

Do you have to wear protective clothing i.e. gloves, protective suits, face mask, etc…
