I think because of societal pressure that we have to do well in exams or we won’t do well in life. But this isn’t true! I had to resit all of my AS levels, and I failed an exam while I was an undergraduate and now I’m about to finish a PhD 🙂 As long as you realise there is more to life than exams, and as long as you do the best that you personally are capable of, then there is no need to stress
When we encounter stressful situations, our body makes a stress hormone (chemical) that trigger a ‘flight or fight’ response. This response helps us to respond quickly to dangerous situations which in the past would have helped us stay alive. It is what would have made our ancestors run away if they spotted a big scary tiger, instead of chilling out near it and becoming a tiger’s breakfast. Biologically we still have this process (and its still often useful) but our bodies also interpret other stressful things like exams in the same way.
