For the most part I help chemists who have a process which makes a chemical in small amounts (like a few grams) but who want to make tonnes and tonnes of that chemical. I go through their process and figure out if anything they are doing might be a problem on the bigger scale and how we can get around that problem!
For people like me who make very small quantities we are often less worried about how efficient the process is, and doing in on a small scale also reduces risks. If we wanted to make lots of it we would need to ask scientists like Aimee to see how we could do it safely (and often much more efficiently!). If my reaction makes a bit of gas then that’s okay, but if a tonne-scale reaction makes a lot of gas then it could explode!
