When I don’t know something that I need to understand for work I normally look on Google first! There are so many good resources on the internet that it helps me to start understanding the topic. Next I read papers (scientific reports) from other scientists to learn more in depth information. I also talk to my colleagues for advice.

I ask my co-workers. Everyone has different areas of expertise and ways of looking at problems, so they might have an insight I’ve missed, or they might just know what the answer is! If they don’t know, then I turn to google

That depends on the problem. If it’s something I don’t know the answer to because of a lack of knowledge of the reaction I will ask a colleague or look it up online. If it’s something I have a lot of data for but can’t work out the cause of the problem or how to proceed (eg. a probelem which has popped up with a process on plant which has been running for years without a hitch) I use a set of tools called “Six Sigma” tools, which help me to track down any common things which happen every time the process goes wrong.

if it is about work, I will go and ask colleagues and/or read scientific articles on the topic.
If it is about other things, like the name of a singer, I will go on my computer and use Google!
