During the first two years of my PhD I didn’t have a very good work/life balance. I worked too much and got very stressed. When I started making sure that I took time to relax, hang out with friends and do more sport I was a lot happier and I actually became more productive at work! Now I know that even though I enjoy my work I need some time to stop thinking about it! Now I try to leave work at 6 pm/7 pm so I can go to the gym, cook healthy food and chat with my housemate for example.

I think if you asked my supervisor he would say I have TOO good a work life balance… I think it’s very important to not work too hard and give your brain time to chill out

I think so! I tend to start work earlier than my friends so that I can get all my work done and still be home for 5pm to have social time. I’m a really strong believer, like Emily, in not working yourself to exhaustion – you won’t do your best work if you aren’t well rested and well balanced, and there’s no point being at work if you aren’t able to give 100% while you’re there!

I typically work between 7:30 – 3:30 Monday – Friday. Up until a few years ago, I had a very good balance between work and social life. 2 years ago my and my wife started a family with our baby daughter. Now all of our spare time is running around after her so the balance is shifted a lot!
